Welcome to our first story of the year, Spot Goes to School by Eric Hill. This is a great story about a little puppy who is going to school for the first time. I wonder why we’re reading this story?!
Literacy and Communication and Language – This story offers up a wealth of opportunities to promote those observation and language skills. In class we talked about what Spot did at school and the similarities in our classroom. The children were very pleased that they had the same games and toys as Spot has at his school. We also noticed that Spot was playing a running game and the inevitable happened, he fell down and hurt himself! We decided as a class that running was not a good idea in the Nursery Garden.
Maths – There are lots of mathematical activities and language to explore in this story. How many friends are in his class? Is his classroom big or small? Does he go to school all day or in the morning/afternoon? What clues can you find to answer some of these questions? We’ve learned some new number songs too (youtube Dream English Let’s Count 1-10 and Zero, Zero Super Hero), perhaps you could sing them at home too?
Until next time, do good looking for adventures, clean your ears out for good listening and turn your noggins (brains) on for good learning.
Take care and stay safe,
