In Science, we have been learning about the seasons and exploring the changes that happen as we move into Autumn.
Recently, we have experienced lots of different types of weather. We have been using our senses to observe the world around us and have noticed that the weather is becoming colder and windier. We have been thinking carefully about how we can tell when the seasons are changing and what we might see, hear and feel as Autumn arrives.
During our Forest School session, we became weather explorers and made our very own wind detectors! 🌬️ We used these to investigate how windy different areas around our school were.
We discovered that the trees in the forest provided shelter from the wind, helping to block it and making some areas feel much calmer. When we moved out onto the open field, where there were no trees to provide shelter, our wind detectors picked up lots more wind! We were amazed to discover that some areas of the forest were windier than others, too.
This was a fantastic opportunity to investigate how our environment can affect the weather we experience. We loved getting hands-on with our science learning and making discoveries about the world around us!
🏡 Three Autumn activities to try at home
1. 🍂 Go on an autumn walk
Take a walk around your local area and look for signs that autumn is arriving. Can you spot changing leaf colours, fallen leaves, conkers or acorns? Talk about how the trees and plants are changing.
2. 🌬️ Become a weather detective
Spend a few minutes outside and use your senses to investigate the weather. Can you feel the wind on your face? Can you hear the leaves rustling? Is the air warmer or colder than you expected? Talk about how today’s weather compares with yesterday’s.
3. 🌳 Find a windy and a sheltered spot
With an adult, visit two different outdoor areas, such as an open space and somewhere sheltered by trees or buildings. Can you feel a difference in the wind? What happens to the leaves or branches in each place? Explain why you think one area might be windier than the other.
Have fun exploring autumn together! 🍁
