Young Coders in Action! 🌟
Over the past few weeks, Year 2’s Herons and Swans have been becoming brilliant young computer scientists! Their computing lessons have been filled with exploration, problem-solving and lots of exciting challenges.
The children have been learning how to create and follow commands using computers and iPads. One of their favourite activities has been navigating their way through digital treasure mazes. By giving clear instructions—such as forward, turn left, turn right—the children have helped characters find hidden treasure while practising accuracy and logical thinking.
As their confidence grew, the classes began running codes using algorithms. Step by step, they learned that an algorithm is simply a set of instructions. Now, they can input a command and a direction, then build these into a complete sequence of steps to solve a problem. It has been fantastic to see them debugging, trying again, and celebrating success when their algorithms work!
Their enthusiasm, teamwork and curiosity have made this a wonderful unit of computing learning.

If your child would like to continue practising their coding skills, here are three fun things they can do at home:
-
2Go – Create Your Own Maze
Children can design a route, set movements and practise giving clear directions to move an object around their own grid. -
2Code – Chimp Level Challenges
These beginner coding activities help build confidence by using simple commands, events and instructions. -
Coding Games – Debug the Instructions
Let your child try to spot the mistakes in a code sequence and fix them—a great way to strengthen problem-solving skills.
