Our Reception children had a wonderful time this week celebrating Hedgehog Day and learning all about these fascinating little animals. We explored where hedgehogs live, discovering that they like cosy places such as gardens, hedges and piles of leaves. The children also learned what hedgehogs eat, including insects, worms, and other tasty bugs. We shared some fun facts too — the children were amazed to learn that hedgehogs are nocturnal and use their sharp spines to curl up and stay safe.
The children got creative by making their own hedgehogs using clay. They carefully added spikes, using different tools and techniques, and showed great focus and imagination. The results were fantastic, and everyone was very proud of their work!

This week in maths, our Reception children have been busy exploring the parts of 6 and 7. We focused on helping the children understand that numbers can be made in different ways, building strong early number sense. The children used double die frames to show the different combinations that make 6 and 7. They enjoyed filling the frames, counting carefully, and talking about how the numbers could be split and put back together again. There were lots of great mathematical conversations as they compared amounts and explained their thinking.

How you can help at home:
- Ask your child some fun facts about hedgehogs
- Ask your child to show you parts of 6 and 7 on their hands
