What a fun-filled and busy week we’ve had in Nursery! This week, our story focus was Dear Zoo by Rod Campbell, a firm favourite! The children were completely captivated as we read the book together, taking turns to guess which animal might be hiding in each crate the zoo sent. There was lots of excitement and laughter as we revealed everything from a too big elephant to a jumpy frog! Our discussions led us to think carefully about each animal and why they would not make a really good pet? Why might they be a bit tricky to look after?

Following on from the story, the children had a brilliant time designing and building enclosures to keep the animals safe and comfortable. We used a wide range of construction toys and even got creative with recycled materials to make sure each animal had just the right kind of home. These activities sparked some lovely conversations about animal needs and size comparisons. “It’s too small for the giraffe!” and “The lion needs strong walls!” were just some of the thoughtful comments we heard.

In maths, we’ve been getting active with number songs and rhymes, which help us count both forwards and backwards. Songs like How many fingers on one hand? and Five little Ducks have been great fun and help embed our rote counting skills. We’ve also started matching numerals to amounts, beginning to understand that the number ‘3’ represents three objects, for example. The children are making fantastic progress with this!
For art we have been exploring the work of British artist Clarice Cliff. Her bold colours and patterns really caught the children’s eyes, and we’ve been working carefully, step by step, to create our own masterpieces inspired by her style. We won’t give too much away just yet! These beautiful creations will be kept a surprise until they’re ready to be revealed in all their glory!
We’re so proud of how engaged, imaginative, and thoughtful the children have been this week. Their curiosity and creativity shine through in everything they do.
How you can help at home:
When reading bedtime stories, ask your child to explore the covers of the books. Can they guess what the book might be about of who the characters might be?
Play listening games where your child needs to distinguish between sounds in the house e.g opening the cutlery drawer, running a tap or a clock ticking.
Can your child do a number hunt in the house? Can they find the numbers 1-5 anywhere in your house? Maybe on the remote control or on the front door?
Have a lovely weekend!
