Celebrating Science Week

This week, Year 1 had a great time celebrating Science Week! The wee began with an exciting whole school assembly where we learnt about some inspiring scientists and were introduced to our whole school investigation. We were going to work collaboratively to find the average height of the children within each year group at Merry Hill.

The children were so engaged and it was wonderful to see them working scientifically applying their knowledge and using measurement skills to gather accurate data.

The Year 1 children worked in groups to find out how many multilink cubes tall they each were and then proudly shared their results with the class. They loved working together on this hands on investigation and it was a great way for them to understand the importance of accurate data collection.

The teachers then put all the information together and found out that the average year 1 child is 59 multilink cubes tall. We are in the process of working hard to create a life sized model of a Year 1 child. This is how it looks so far!

Science Week has sparked the curiosity of of many of our budding year 1 scientists and it has been lovely to hear them asking questions, sharing their views and working together.

How to Support at Home

  • Measure some of your family members – think about what you could use to measure them with. Ask your grown up to help you work out the average height of your family.
  • Use the vocabulary taller and shorter to compare the height of your friends and family. Who is the tallest? shortest?
  • Discuss how tall you think you might be when you are a grown up, why do you think this?
  • Visit the library and look for other science investigations you could try.
