Literacy and St David’s day

We hope you had a lovely half term break!

This week in Reception we started learning our new literacy story, The Journey Home. The children came in on Monday morning to find a tuff tray filled with ice, polar bears and a panda on a building. This sparked lots of questions as to what it was about. They loved exploring the tuff tray! We introduced the story and made up some actions to help the children learn it. The children have learnt that the polar bear is living on the melting ice, the panda is living in a busy city, the orangutan’s tree is disappearing and people are stealing the elephants’ tusks. We were very impressed at the children’s suggestions of how to help these animals and save their homes.

We were also very lucky this week because we had Mr Jeffreys come in to school to speak to Reception about St David’s Day. Mr Jeffreys is Welsh so he taught us how he celebrates St David’s Day.  We learnt that daffodils is the flower that symbolises wales, St David is a very kind man who showed people how to do good things which is why he is so memorable and welsh people like to eat a special soup called Cawl to celebrate. Some of the children got a chance to dress up in traditional welsh costumes and they got to hold and explore daffodils!

WORLD BOOK DAY REMINDER:

It is World Book Day on the 6th March. We will be looking at the text ‘ Here We Are’  by Oliver Jeffers and completing several activities throughout the day based on this exciting text. Between 8.45-9.15 we are inviting parents and guardians to come in and read with their child to celebrate and promote reading for pleasure. If you can make it into Reception to hear your child read we would greatly appreciate it!
