This week the children have been very creative. Not only have they made numerous cards and written letters to their parents to show their love and appreciation, they have also worked collaboratively to create a piece of art inspired by our artist for the term, Yayoi Kusama!
After reading our Dragon Post book, the children began thinking about all the different people the character Alex wrote to seeking advice. The children changed the story’s characters and along the way discovered people doing different occupations that they could ask for help. This led to them finding out more about each job by interviewing an expert in the field. The children enjoyed role playing and asking their friends questions about the different jobs.
In maths the children have been comparing quantities, noting when there are more or fewer. They were brilliant at using their stem sentences to help them give clear explanations about their thinking. e.g

The green mitten has fewer snowflakes than the red mitten.
The red mitten has more snowflakes than the green mitten.
In art, the children have really enjoyed learning about Yayoi, finding out about her past and why she became an artist. They studied some of her artwork and noted that she REALLY liked decorating almost anything she could find with dots! To start off, the children experimented painting with a wide range of tools to create spots. This led to them decorating pumpkins and mushrooms with spots. After studying one of her exhibits, The Obliteration Room, we decided to try and make our picture. This really gave the children the opportunity to create a mindful piece of art without any restrictions, apart from keeping the dots on the canvas! How you can help at home:
Your child will bring home phonics sheets in their bookbag today that will show the high frequency words and sounds we have learned this term and also illustrate the ones your child still finds a bit tricky. Please support your child by playing a range of games (e.g. snap/ bingo) with these words and sounds to help them memorise them.
We hope you have a lovely half term break.
Best wishes,
The Reception team xx
