History

Our goal is for all pupils to leave Merry Hill with a natural curiosity to find out about the past and how it has shaped the world around us.

History at Merry Hill is carefully designed to meet the needs of young children by first learning about their own history and developing an understanding of vocabulary such as yesterday and change(s) within this familiar and meaningful context. In KS1, their historical knowledge and understanding is broadened as they learn about the Victorian history of our school, before travelling further back in time and beyond our school to learn about the Great Fire of London.  The pupils also study a diverse range of historical significant people including some predominant British kings and queens, who inspire our ‘Ambitious Learners’.  Key vocabulary such as sourcessimilarities and differences continue to be developed and children are encouraged to look at artefacts and think critically about them, weighing up evidence alongside meaningful explanations and narratives.
