Pumpkin soup!

This week in Year 2 we have learnt the story ‘Pumpkin soup’.

We have learnt about the 5 parts of a story; opening, build up, problem (unfortunately), resolution (luckily) and an ending. We discovered that there are 3 main characters which include a singing duck, a squirrel with a banjo and a cat with a bagpipe.

We read up until the problem (unfortunately) part of the story and then came up with predictions as to what might happen next. In Bears we thought that the duck might travel the world to make a delicious soup. In Giraffes we predicted that when they drink the pumpkin soup- they become a pumpkin!

After that, we looked at the structure of a sentence. We concluded that a sentence should need a ‘who’ and a ‘what’ to make sense. For example: ‘The duck had white feathers.’. Here are some of our sentences:

How you can help at home:

  • Read the opening and build up of a story and practise making predictions about what might happen next.
  • Practise using nouns and verbs to make a sentence.
  • Use the conjunctions ‘and’ and ‘but’ to join two clauses together.
