Science in Year 1

In Science we have been learning about carnivores, herbivores and omnivores. We received a letter from the reptile house at London Zoo asking for help with their poo samples. We got stuck in and explored the samples, looking for clues to help us decide whether they had come from a carnivore, herbivore or omnivore. We were rather relieved to find out that the poo was only play dough in the end! 😉

Then we launched ourselves into learning about Signs of Spring and conducted a plant hunt in the Forest. We looked for buds, flowers, leaves, stems and roots. We discussed their similarities and differences. We wondered what their job is and how they contribute to the life of the plant. I.e. the roots suck up water and nutrients and root the plant into the ground so they don’t blow over in the wind.

How you can help at home:

Film your own 5 minute Springwatch plant documentary.

Write a list of questions about plants to ask an expert.

Visit and interview staff at the garden centre with your queries.

Draw your favourite plants you spot on spring walks.

Enjoy the Easter holidays!

Watch out for the Easter bunny.
