Science in Year One

We have really enjoyed welcoming everyone back after February half term and continuing our Animal Science topic.

Lesson 6 Lions and Panthers could name different types of animals and decide which animal group they belong to.  They used the features of each animal group to justify their answers. They used a stem sentence to organise their ideas: I know a ______ is a ________ because …..

Lesson 7  we learnt that animals that eat meat are called carnivores, and that carnivores are usually fast, with sharp teeth, sharp beaks or claws.

In the next lesson we will – Describe the teeth of carnivores and herbivores and recap why they are shaped as they are. We will look at food and decide which of the items a herbivore would most likely eat. We will play – How many herbivores can you name in 1 minute – alongside a range of other quick thinking games.

WORLD BOOK DAY REMINDER:

It is World Book Day on the 6th March. We will be looking at the text ‘ Here We Are’  by Oliver Jeffers and completing several activities throughout the day based on this exciting text. Between 8.45-9.15 we are inviting parents and guardians to come in and read with their child to celebrate and promote reading for pleasure. If you can make it into Panthers or Lions to hear your child read we would greatly appreciate it!

How you can help at home:

Record your child doing a news report with facts about a chosen animal and upload their news report to Seesaw.

Write a story about your favourite animal and describe its features and the way it lives.

When you are doing your weekly shopping  ask your child to use two baskets and fill one with food for a carnivore in one with food for a herbivore!
