Year 2 Maths – Tens and Ones

What marvellous mathematicians we are!

For our first week in Year two we have been learning about place value within a two digit number. We have been learning that double digits are made of tens and ones, for example that 14 is made of 1 ten and 4 ones. We have been using our tens and ones to help us make a number. Then we learnt that there shouldn’t be more than 9 ones in the ones column and that we need to regroup 10 ones for 1 ten.

After that, we have been comparing numbers up to 100. For example, 63 is greater than 36 because it has 6 tens and 36 only has 3 tens. It has challenged us to think about the reasoning behind the number.

How to help at home

  • Ask your child to draw a number with tens and ones, for example 55 is made of 5 tens and 5 ones.
  • Use money to make a number, discussing the value of the coins.
  • Regroup a number in different ways, for example 43 could be 4 tens and 3 ones or 3 tens and 13 ones.
