English in Year 1

This week the Lions and Panthers received a surprise letter and an unexpected visitor! We have been asked to help our visitor catch a missing star! We came up with different ideas of how to do this, including laying a trail of star snacks to tempt the star down from the sky, going to Scafell Pike to try and reach it because Scafell Pike is the highest mountain in England and asking Rapunzel to help us because she is high up.

To help the boy solve his problem we are going to write him a list of instructions. We have already learnt that a set of instructions on a computer is called an algorithm but this is our first time writing instructions in English.  We worked together on our whole class text maps and went outside to act out catching the star. Look at the fantastic hiding places we found at Merry Hill School!

We thought about what instructions need to be successful. We decided they should include time words (first, then, next, after that and finally) LOTS of bossy verbs (grab, run, get) and they need to be sequenced in the right order so they make sense. We had a go at putting our new instructions into the correct order and writing some of our own in our English books, such as How to Blow Bubbles, How to Plant Seeds and How to Get Ready for School.

Have a look at our fantastic learning here.
