Nocturnal Animals

On Monday morning, the Reception children were very excited to come into school as they knew some special animals were coming to visit. We asked the children which animals they thought they would see and then explained to them that the visiting animals were all nocturnal. We were impressed that some children could tell us what nocturnal means! Ranger Callum introduced his animals, explaining to the children that they were his pets. This surprised them! We met a fluffy bunny called Alfie, a millipede, a leopard gecko called Spots, a snake and some gerbils. The adults were amazed by how careful the children were with the animals and how well they engaged with the session. The children showed resilience when holding the animals and even if they felt a little apprehensive, still had a go at petting all the animals.

This week in phonics we have started review sessions. These sessions include re-capping everything that the children have already learnt and ensuring they are confident. It involves reading and writing the sounds, both of which will require the children to apply and practice their new sounds. It also allows the children to solidify any gaps in their learning. The pictures below show some of the sounds we have focussed on during our review this week.

How you can help at home:

  • Ensure your child is reading everyday and help them with the sounds shown above.
  • In maths we have looked at number 5 and where it can be found in number 6 and 7. Ask your child to show you 6 or 7 fingers. Then can they show you in a different way? How many fingers on each hand?
  • Speak to them about nocturnal animals! What facts can they remember from Ranger Callum?
  • Can they write the following words: star, book, hook, surf, tear.
