The Little Red Hen

This week in Reception we have been learning the story of the Little Red Hen, using Talk 4 Writing. The children enjoyed using actions and pictures to sequence the events within the story. They also enjoyed asking questions to the characters during a hot seat activity where Miss Reuben acted the part of the sleepy cat. During child initiated play, the children were able to cut out and create Little Red Hen character puppets and used these to practice retelling the story.

On Monday, the reception children started phonics and have learnt the sounds ‘s’ ‘a’ ‘t’ ‘p’. Phonics is important for developing reading and writing skills. The children were eager to learn a new sound each day and use their robot arms to orally blend words.

During maths, the children have been looking at numbers 1,2 and 3 and how they can represent the numbers on their fingers in different ways. The children took pleasure in playing a game with a partner where they held up 1,2 or 3 fingers and their partner had to copy them.

The Reception team have loved getting to know each child, watching them settle into Reception routines. Friendships have been forming positively and it is wonderful to see the children interacting with their peers.

How you can help at home:
– Ask your child to listen out for words starting with s,a,t and p.
– Practice counting up to number 10
– Ask your child to have a go at forming the letters s,a,t and p using the phonics rhyme from the picture above.
We hope you have a wonderful weekend.
