This week in reception

This week we have begun thinking about the ocean and the creatures that live in it.

We have had lots of fun playing with our own beach, walking the plank and fishing for sea creatures without using our hands.

Here we are enjoying the sunshine in the garden. The children are very confident now at making their own fun with their friends and using resources safely and sensibly. They have learned to, “Identify and moderate their own feelings socially and emotionally,” Development Matters 2021.

In Mindful Monday we have begun designing and creating boats to test on the water. Today we were thinking about the different shapes boats are made of. We are learning to, “Create collaboratively, sharing ideas, resources and skills,” (Development Matters 2021).

Maths

This week we are practising our subitising and linking the amount we have subitised to concrete equipment such as numicon. We have searched the garden for jellyfish with subitised amounts and matched them to the numicon. We played 5 little kittens with a partner to practise our number bonds to 5 and visualised how many are there even though we cannot see the ones under the bed. We are learning to, “Automatically recall number bonds for numbers 0–5 and some to 10,” (Development Matters 2021).

Phonics,

This week we have learned some new digraphs:

ay – play all day

ou – a proud cloud

ie- pie on your tie

ea- each have a treat.

Spot these in your reading books.

How you can help at home:

Choose 5 items and hide some of the 5 under a cloth. Can your child identify the 2 parts that make 5? These are called number bonds.

Practise this week’s nursery rhyme at home:
