Help me help myself!

There are many ways to help build up independence and confidence in everyday life.  At Merry Hill, we promote a positive ‘can do’ attitude towards learning. This can be seen in many different ways – changing independently for school or PE lessons, using cutlery to cut up food, making their bed in the morning, having a go at sounding out when reading and writing new words.

As the weather is getting colder, we are encouraging the children to zip their coats up to keep themselves warm! We would love you to encourage your child to try and zip their coat up for themselves first before asking an adult for help. We will of course help any children that still find these tasks tricky, but would appreciate your support in encouraging your child to build up their independence and resilience in these areas – there are a lot of children in Reception and only a handful of staff!

If you haven’t yet completed a ‘WOW’ card for your child, perhaps this could be their moment to shine! We’d love to see any photos or videos of your child demonstrating independence on Tapestry as it is great to be able to share these with the children at school.

Have a great weekend and keep practising!
